Somewhat surprisingly, one of the most vexing questions for men is what to wear to church. The matter is made more difficult by the proliferation of various religions annd even different denominations. Add to this the changing fashions, especially the trend to what we can call “casual with a vengeance.“ Altogether, we have a situation that can confuse even a college professor.
Fortunately, the Internet provides numerous resources to help men sort through this dilemma. I like the article linked-to below. Surely, dressing on the more conservative side is a smart move for any gentleman. This does not mean one has to dress up in black tie and tails, or in a character outfit which makes you look like a butler.
It is actually easier to identify and rule out attire which is not appropriate. The two biggest no – no’s are shorts and sandals. Appearing as though you have just come off the beach when going to church may be okay for young adults in Miami Beach, though I question it. Wearing something like that too a traditional church could be quite the faux pas. Best to air on the conservative side
In a religious ceremony, we are supposed to be focused on adoration and veneration. Anything which causes the mind to wander, that is, any distraction, shows disrespect for others, to say nothing of the divine.
Plain clothes without any rips or tears are an absolute must. T-shirts — A garment in the category of underwear, should never be worn without an over shirt. Untucked shirts, if designed to be worn that way, can be acceptable. As for pants, jeans are out-of-bounds, especially with any tears or holes, even when they have been made that way in the factory. It speaks of a pretty high level of disrespect.
In short, anything which could make it harder for others to be comfortable and focused should be left at home.
